When it comes to marketing, small business owners keep shooting themselves in the foot. Not literally, but you know what I mean.

Building a great marketing strategy doesn’t happen overnight. Moreover, executing a marketing strategy is a long-term commitment. If you’re not getting the results you want, it’s time to get some expert advice.

If your marketing strategy isn’t leading anywhere, stop for a moment and analyze if you’re not falling into these common mistakes.

3. Listening to all the wrong people.

Have you ever posted a question on Facebook about how to fix your kitchen sink and gotten a dozen different responses? How did it make you feel?

Everyone wants to give their advice, but asking too many of the wrong people for their opinion will only leave you confused. It’s great to get a second or third opinion on most things, but when it comes to your marketing strategy, make sure you ask the experts and not your best friend (unless your best friend happens to be a marketing expert).

Just because Joe’s hot dog business is taking off, it doesn’t mean that his marketing strategy is going to work for Donna’s ballet classes. Make your marketing strategy as unique as your company.

2. Choosing the wrong social media platforms, or none at all.

Whether you’re a huge social media fan or not, social media platforms are key players in marketing strategies. On the other hand, if most of your buyers have boycotted Facebook and strictly use Twitter now (you know, to promote their boycott), then you need to follow them there.

We’ve all been there. Switching or expanding your platform use can be exhausting, especially when you finally figured out which filters you like most on Instagram. However, your loyalty is with your buyers, not with your social media platform.

Just because you are not on Facebook, it doesn’t mean that your clients or prospects are not, and the really scary part is that, if you are not there…then they will follow your competitor’s Facebook instead!

We’ve written interesting articles about social media in the past (simple search social media in our search box), but the most useful for this topic would be the one that talks about How to make your business stand out on social media.

1. Trying to do everything on your own.

Do you know someone who can bake Crème Brulee and cook poached eggs while holding a phone to their ear and carrying a baby chimpanzee?

If you do, we want to meet them! Meanwhile, back in the office, the truth is that a marketing strategy requires a team or it simply won’t be effective. Focus on what you to best as a business owner, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

If you don’t know where to start, hire a branding and marketing firm to guide you in the right direction. We happen to know some people who know just what your business needs – wink wink!
